Aida (in between) / 2000
is a structured solo dance improvisation.
‘Aida’ is another pronunciation of the Japanese word well known for a Zen concept ‘Ma’, both meaning ‘space in between’.
In this solo, I question and play with my being native Japanese and lack of Japanese tradition in myself. Through this it attempts to point out the increasingly visible issue in post-modern societies i.e. traditions becoming something exotic to even the natives of that tradition, or a process of cultural transformation in one’s body - a globalisation.
Duration: approx 20min (15min version also exists)
Music: Kengyou Ikuyama, Ryoji Ikeda and Carston Nicolai
